LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS
A program of learning assistance is provided for students who are unable to function in the regular classrooms without this type of assistance.
Strategies classes are programmed electives for students who have been identified by teacher referral to the L.A.T. and subsequently revealed by testing to have serious deficiencies. The students will still receive regular instruction in their core courses.
The Learning Assistance program can only be effective if the regular classroom teacher is fully aware of the program and its purposes, and does everything s/he can to help achieve those goals. To help maximize the impact of this program, the classroom teacher will:
1. Identify and refer potential candidates to the L.A.T.
2. Provide information at the request of the L.A.T.
3. Support the efforts of the L.A.T.
4. Consider assistance from the L.A.T. to provide appropriate instruction for the student in the classroom
Gifted/Enrichment
Every teacher provides enrichment to their courses of study in as many ways as possible. In grades 7, 8 & 9 this is carried on in every classroom. "Streaming" for enrichment purposes is not employed.
ESL (English as a Second Language)
Students whose first language is not English and who have been speaking English for less than five years will be provided with additional language support through the learning assistance program.
